Public Engagement

Show citizens the work, not the fleet.

SnowOps publishes a live, public-facing winter-operations map and an open dashboard — letting residents see plow progress and road conditions in real time, and report what they see. All on an anonymous, privacy-safe surface that protects your operations and your operators.

Transparency that builds public trust

"When will my road be plowed?" is the question every public works department fields all winter. SnowOps' public map answers it — visually, in real time — reducing call volume and demonstrating value to residents and elected officials alike.

  • Live public operations map

A browser-based React + MapLibre map served on the public web, showing real-time plow activity and road status — no login required.

  • Public dashboards

At-a-glance operational status: routes completed, material deployed, vehicles active, and storm-day progress.

  • Crowdsourced condition reporting

Citizens submit condition reports (with optional auth) that flow into a moderation queue before publishing — turning residents into extra eyes on the road.

  • Anonymous & redacted by design

The public surface shows hashed vehicle IDs and positions only — no real IDs, no speed, no material usage, no operator identity.

One map, two audiences

The public map (:7007) shows an anonymous redacted view; the staff GeoLibre client (:7008) shows full-fidelity operational detail. Same data pipeline, carefully different surfaces — so you can be transparent without being exposed.

No license to view

The built-in public map needs no ArcGIS license to display live winter-operations status. Residents just open a URL.

What the public sees

Unit abc123de — active Plowing
Unit f456ghi7 — active Salting

8-character hashed IDs. No real plate, no operator, no speed.

How it works

From your AVL pipeline to the public's browser

1

Ingest

Vehicle positions stream in from your AVL providers (Traccar, Geotab, Samsara, etc.) into the shared tracking pipeline.

2

Redact

The public service hashes vehicle IDs, strips sensitive fields, and broadcasts only position + status over the public hub.

3

Publish

The React + MapLibre public map renders it live, and the crowdsourced reporter feeds moderated reports back into the operation.
